Olivia with Orange Dala Horse
Olivia is standing by one of the dala horses at Gammelgarden.
Dala Hast (Horse) recognized as "Swedish" and part of the Folk Art and Lore of Sweden. These toys date back to the 1500's.
Hand made during the long dark winter nights in the province of Dalarna, they became popular all over Sweden. They come in all sizes and decorations.
A 9 foot Dala greeted folks at the Swedish Pavilion at the 1939 New York World's Fair wearing the most traditional red/orange coat.
Beginning in the 1990's many independent artists began a Dala Hast revolution with many limited edition and specialized horses.
The girls are doing a unit study about Sweden, Swedish immigration and pioneers (with a focus on Swedish pioneers in Minnesota), and culture.
We are using the Kirsten books (of the American Girl series) as a literature base, and supplementing it with hands-on activities in many different areas.
This has been a fun unit because many historical sites with Swedish connections are located within a half hour of us.
more with magnets
we're still experimenting with magnets on the science shelves. lakeshore learning has great science kits, but they are kind of expensive and have a plastic toy-like quality. still, i bought this one to get an idea of how they are set up. what i loved about it is the "try this!" cards. each one shows a simple picture of something the child can recreate with the materials provided. his allows him to be more independent with the experiments, and he is more likely to really think about what he is doing. i plan to make similar "try this!" cards for future science activities; it's easy enough to photograph myself doing the activities with our materials, or i can just draw it. he'll love that.
